The Celebration of A Traditional Barrio Fiesta | Guisel's Crib

Hello Madlang Pipz. It's me again your storyteller of the day and I want to share with you how we celebrated the typical Bario Fiesta in our place.

A Barrio Fiesta is a vibrant celebration that brings people together to honor their patron saints. This barrio fiesta is celebrated annually with various activities planned by the head of the community, commonly called the Barangay Officials. However, one activity is common in all celebrations of the barrio fiesta: the Thanksgiving Mass.

The barrio fiesta is not only a tradition but also a celebration of unity. Members of the community work hand in hand to prepare for the celebration. They beautify the entire barangay by hanging banderitas. Additionally, they make some retouches to their barangay plaza to enhance its appearance.

Antique is my home province, Barbaza is my hometown, and San Antonio is my second home Barangay. This place is located in Region VI - Western Visayas, Philippines. Although Barangay San Antonio is small, it is known for a distinctive activity called Komedya.

KOMEDYA is a play written in a verse (usually written in an octosyllabic or dodecasyllabic quatrains), which uses conventions or marcha for exit and entrances, batalla or choreographed fighting, and magia or magical effect.

Komedyas are derived from a series of stories. Additionally, the plays transition from one story to another. Staging a Komedya requires time, effort, and money. In our barangay, performing a komedya is a family tradition. This tradition has been passed down from one generation to the next. Each year, a specific family sponsors the Komedya, covering everything from preparation to expenses. In return, this family will be responsible for the entire harvest of a rice field, which is believed to be protected by their patron saint, Nuestra Señora De Salvación.
